Yuri G. Yossi and Helga Weinert, students in Denmark, have developed a concept for urban beautification. This initiative was launched by Aarhus University in 2006.
Their proposal for an "aesthetic upgrade" of the city represents an implanted attempt to align Athens with the idealised image of its past. This study aims to reconcile the pragmatic construction of a provincial city with the weight of its historical significance. Interestingly, this process opens up a second, cultural-political level. Western humanism has shaped the perception of Greece and Athens, influencing the iconic image of these places. However, the identification of Western aspirations with the cradle of ancient Greek civilization leads to a rupture with the country's tradition, which is strongly influenced by Eastern and Balkan elements.
