Presentation Title:
Economic Institute "Nikoletta Brika": The Gap Between the Pursuit of Profit-Oriented Large Projects and the Ability of the Greek Province to Support Them: The Example of the Piraeus Racetrack Site

Presentation Summary: The naval base of the port city of Piraeus (12,000 inhabitants) is being closed, and the local government of this small town, no longer able to fulfill its election promises and extend naval activities, is forced to announce something bold: The former base is to be converted into Greece's first Formula 1 racetrack to replace the lost main source of income for the municipality. In this way, it compels the central government in Corinth to take a closer look at the serious employment issues facing Piraeus. '
At the same time, this ambitious endeavour is intended to satisfy the electorate.
The fact that the publication of such a large planning and construction project does not follow serious planning procedures (no contact with the Formula 1 organisation, no investigation into how other landowners and the military itself feel about it) seems to initially concern no one in the public eye. The purpose of the publication of the study prepared by the reputable F1 construction specialists Landschaft AG from Germany can solely be attributed to a short-sighted political gesture. Sufficient attention has been garnered, and politically valuable time has been gained.
