Regilla's Triangle

At the center of this work is a large triangular plot of land on Regillis Street in central Athens. Between 1959 and 1992, a series of public proposals were commissioned for this undeveloped site—primarily plans for cultural institutions such as museums, theatres, or cultural forums. None of these projects was ever realized. In 1993, the ancient Lyceum (Lykeion) of Aristotle was discovered on the site, permanently excluding the possibility of any future construction. In this work, I present all of these unrealized designs—highly abstracted and positioned according to their original layout and volume on the site—simultaneously, in the form of a 1:50 scale model.
The resulting sculptural object resembles an archaeo-logical excavation: a material condensation of failed yet ambitious architectural visions.
Layers of forgotten pasts and projected futures overlap—visually echoing one another in strikingly similar forms.
