Fyresdal

Fyresdal is an artistic project currently in development.

Its starting point is a typical IKEA assembly manual for a pull-out bed that can be doubled in size with a simple gesture. This manual serves as the template for an experimental graphic novel or artist’s book (mokotomoro-Press).

The original instructional drawings are extended through hand-drawn additions, while strictly preserving IKEA’s pragmatic visual language. Specific rules apply: the pre-printed IKEA illustrations must not be altered or drawn over. However, through an overload of additional visual elements, the instructions are stripped of their original purpose—everything is still there, yet rendered useless.

These drawings are accompanied by a continuous text. At its core is the story of Emil, a twin whose brother Oskar was stillborn. Emil imagines Oskar as alive in order to relieve their mother of the guilt she carries for his death.

The narrative structure of the text mirrors the format of the IKEA manual: certain visual elements correspond to grammatical components, specific words, or expressions.
